Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MD/DO) who specializes in medical and surgical eye care, including cataract, glaucoma, retina, and advanced procedures. An optometrist provides routine eye exams, vision correction, and manages certain eye conditions. At Suncoast Eye Center, our team works collaboratively to ensure complete eye care under one roof.

How often should I have a comprehensive eye exam?

Most adults should have a comprehensive eye exam every year. Patients with diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, or other eye conditions may need more frequent visits.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring:

1. Photo ID

2. Insurance cards

3. List of medications

4. Current glasses or contact lenses

5. Any relevant medical history

Do you accept my insurance?

We accept most major medical and vision insurance plans. Our team can verify your coverage prior to your visit and explain any out-of-pocket costs.

Will my eyes be dilated?

Many comprehensive exams include dilation to fully evaluate the retina and optic nerve. If dilation is necessary, we’ll let you know beforehand and provide guidance for driving afterward.

What are cataracts?

Cataracts occur when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, causing blurry vision, glare, and difficulty seeing at night. Learn more.

Am I a candidate for LASIK?

Ideal candidates:

1. Are 18+ years old

2. Have stable prescriptions

3. Do not have severe dry eye

4. Have healthy corneas

A consultation is the best way to determine candidacy.

What if I’m not a candidate for LASIK?

If LASIK isn’t right for you, other options may include:

1. EVO ICL

2. SMILE

3. PRK

4. Refractive Lens Exchange

We customize vision correction based on your eyes.

We accept most major medical and vision insurance plans. Our team can verify your coverage prior to your visit and explain any out-of-pocket costs.
